TWO competitors in Plimmerton Boating Club’s season opening yacht race gather their bearings while course setter Mark Dijksma (out of picture) holds up a weather vane to test conditions.

The Noelex 22s were two of the many competitors that turned up for the first sail of the spring season at Plimmerton Boating Club.

The event saw club members eager to show off their boats or skills on the water as they set sail around their course.

Taking just over two hours, racers sailed from the boating club to Hongoeka Bay up towards Karehana Bay, before heading down towards Moana Rd in a triangle formation.

The winner of the race has yet to be announced, as first over the line does not count as a technical win.

Depending on shape, size and model of yacht, handicaps are given for it to be a fair race.

The opening of the club’s spring season also saw Jenny Brash – former mayor and newly appointed Porirua/Tawa representative on Greater Wellington Regional Council – declare the season open.

Introduced by club commodore Anton Sutorius, Ms Brash received cheers of applause as she pulled the flag to proclaim the start of season.

“I hope you all have a happy season,” she said.
